Success God’s Way: Redefining What Winning Looks Like

August 04, 20255 min read

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” – Proverbs 16:3

Let’s face it. We live in a culture that celebrates the grind.

From social media influencers who seem to have it all, to TED talks that glorify 5 a.m. hustle culture, success is sold to us as a package: wealth, recognition, aesthetics, followers, power.

But for the Christian woman who loves Jesus and dreams big , this raises a tension:

Can I be both ambitious and surrendered?

Can I pursue my calling and still live a life that pleases God?

Yes. But it requires a new lens: God’s lens.

When Winning Feels Empty: The Trap of Worldly Success

The truth is, many women reach the “top” only to realize it’s lonely, stressful, and disconnected from what really matters. Burnout becomes the price of ambition. And success, instead of satisfying the soul, exposes its dryness.

Worldly success says:

  • “Climb faster.”

  • “Do more.”

  • “Don’t stop until you’re seen.”

  • “Fake it if you have to.”

But God whispers:

  • “Be still and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

  • “You are enough because I am enough.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

  • “My plans for you are to prosper you, but not in the way the world defines prosperity.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (paraphrased)

Why Ambition Isn’t Evil, But Needs Redemption

Ambition in itself is not sinful. Many women in the Bible were ambitious in the right way:

  • Deborah led Israel with courage and wisdom.

  • Esther stepped into royal influence to save a nation.

  • Lydia was a businesswoman and a patron of the early Church.

  • The Proverbs 31 woman was entrepreneurial, industrious, and deeply spiritual.

What matters is this: Who is your ambition serving?
Is your ambition leading you closer to God’s will or fueling a desire to prove yourself to others?

There is a fine line between holy hustle and self-glorifying grind.

Redefining Success Through God’s Eyes

Let’s unpack a Kingdom definition of success. God’s version looks radically different from the world’s.

Here are 7 hallmarks of God-honoring success:

1. Purpose-Driven Obedience

You're not just productive, you’re intentional. You’ve aligned your work with your God-given purpose. You understand that success begins with saying yes to God, not just chasing every good opportunity.

“We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

2. Peace-Filled Progress

You’re moving forward, but your heart is not driven by anxiety or competition. Your pace is led by the Spirit, not by pressure.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” – Isaiah 26:3

3. Daily Faithfulness in Small Things

You show up consistently, in the quiet spaces, the unpaid moments, the unseen effort. God celebrates consistency over clout.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” – Luke 16:10

4. Holy Boldness

You take Spirit-led risks. You walk through doors even when they scare you, because you trust the One who opens them.

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” – Hebrews 11:1

5. Impact Over Image

You’re not building your own platform, you’re using it for Kingdom impact. You live to glorify the name of Jesus, not your own brand.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

6. Secure Identity

You don’t let success define your worth. Whether you’re applauded or overlooked, you rest in knowing you are chosen, seen, and deeply loved by God.

“You are no longer a slave but a daughter; and since you are His daughter, God has made you also an heir.” – Galatians 4:7

7. Eternal Vision

You live with forever in mind. You’re more concerned with treasures in heaven than trends on earth. Your “yes” today builds for eternity.

“Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” – Matthew 6:19–21

How to Walk Out Godly Success in a World That Glorifies Hustle

So how do you, an ambitious woman of God, keep your heart aligned?

1. Start With Surrender, Not Strategy

Before you build a business plan or fill your planner, pause. Pray. Ask God to reveal what He wants to build through you this season.

Prayer Prompt: “God, help me want what You want. Align my plans with Your purpose.”

2. Build in the Secret Place

Your most powerful success moments happen off the stage, on your knees. Never let public visibility replace private intimacy.

3. Filter Every Opportunity Through Purpose

Not every open door is divine. Ask:

  • Will this glorify God?

  • Does this align with my calling?

  • Am I striving or obeying?

4. Rest as a Weapon

Sabbath is not laziness, it’s warfare against the idol of productivity. Rest declares: “God is the source, not me.”

5. Measure Success Differently

What if:

  • Joy in your home is a success?

  • Peace in your heart is a win?

  • Obeying today’s assignment is a victory?

6. Journal Your Journey

Document the God moments, provision, progress, pivot points. Your journal will become your testimony in future dry seasons.

A Real-Life Example of This Shift

Sarah, a thriving entrepreneur and mother of two, seemed to have it all, financial success, influence, and respect but behind the scenes she was exhausted and restless. One night, after hitting a major career milestone, she sensed God whisper, “You’re chasing success I never asked you to chase.” That moment led her to slow down, seek God first each day, and measure her wins by obedience, integrity, and presence with her family. While her business didn’t “explode” by worldly standards, it became more impactful and fulfilling, and she discovered the peace of walking in step with God’s definition of success.

Encouragement for Your Journey

Dear sister,
If you’re in a season of building and waiting, trust Him.
If you feel unseen, know that God sees every seed you plant.
If you’re tired, He is your strength and reward.

You don’t have to compromise holiness to succeed.
You don’t have to dull your light to fit in.
You don’t have to perform for the applause of men.
You are already deeply loved, wildly capable, and fully equipped to win, God’s way.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where have I allowed the world’s definition of success to shape my goals?

  2. What goals, ambitions, or projects do I need to surrender to God today?

  3. What does a successful day look like when viewed through God’s eyes?
